FREEDOM SERVICE DOGS (FSD) was founded in 1987 as a tax-exempt charity. FSD rescues dogs from front range shelters and gives them a second chance. They train Freedom Service Dogs to help people with mobility impairments gain independence, confidence, endurance, and peace of mind. We provide the dog at no charge to the client. MATTIE J. T. STEPANEK delivered an incredible message of hope and peace during his brief lifetime. He published numerous books of poetry and numbered among his friends former President Jimmy Carter with whom he co-wrote Just Peace. Mattie died June 22, 2004, just three weeks before his 14th birthday. JESSICA HIPPO During the floods on March 11, 2000, Tonie and Shirley Joubert went for a walk. Shirley saw movement where the lawn meets the water. The movement was a small hippo calf, ambilical cord still attached, only a few hours old. The calf was tired and weak with no energy. Realizing that she needed help, Tonie, a retired game ranger, picked her up carried her to the house and prepared a formula similar to colestrum to feed her. THE ELEPHANT SANCTUARY in Tennessee, founded in 1995, is the nation's largest natural habitat refuge developed specifically for endangered African and Asian elephants. It operates on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tenness, 85 miles southwest of Nashville.
